Personal papers and business records of Thomas H. Perkins (l764-l854), one of Boston's most successful China merchants. Loose papers consist of correspondence, invoices and other business papers which provide a good survey of late 18th and early 19th century mercantile trade. Included are discussions of trade during the War of 1812 and vivid accounts of the Boston Tea Party and 18th century slave revolts in Santo Domingo. Important correspondents include John Jacob Astor, Robert Bennet Forbes and Georges Washington Motier de Lafayette. The bound volumes include diaries of Thomas H. Perkins and his grandson, Thomas H. Perkins III (1823-1900) and account books, blotters, journals, ledgers, letterbooks and waste books of E. Bumstead & Co.; J. & T.H. Perkins, J. & T.H. Perkins & Sons; and Perkins & Co.

John Jacob Astor organized the American Fur Company in 1808, and the Pacific Fur Company in 1810. In the spring of 1811 he established a post at Astoria on the Columbia River, but sold it to British interests in 1813. By 1817 Astor had gained control of all the Mississippi Valley posts of the Northwest and Southwest Companies. The Columbia Fur Company, one of Astor's major competitors, was absorbed in 1827.
